FUNNY COMES FIRST

Sure, stand-up comedy makes us laugh, but that’s not its only purpose. Comics use the stage to make arguments and express bigger picture world-views, getting people to laugh in the process of making deeper points.

Mike Pesca spends an hour with each comic, seeking to identify a broader thesis, and pressing comics to put a finer point on their arguments. Funny comes first, but it’s ideas that are explored on Funny You Should Mention.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Great conversation and good...

Love hearing comedians and Mike talk about how jokes work or how someone came up with a bit. Bonus: I've also gone to see some of the comedians he's interviewed, whom I ahd never heard of before. Mike's interview skills combined with his love of comedy make this so much fun.

Crack open a box of Mike and...

A practical comedian and a theoretical comedian walk into a bar and order a Mr. Pibb. If I were either of those, I'd be able to land a punchline, but thankfully both Mike and Myq are as practically funny as they are analytical and familiar with the technical aspects of comedy. If dissecting a joke kills the humor, vivisection of comedy in general reveals its miraculous operations. Pesca's extensive and eclectic cultural knowledge introduced me to the Gricean Maxims, the working man's "Dr. Pepper", and the uxoriousness of both Pesca and his guest.

Amazing to hear Mike and Mohanad Elshieky dissect finding comedy in tragedy, and very impressed with Mike's geopolitical grasp on top of natural rapport with guests. Insightful revealing, and often touching- this is looking under the hood of comedy to find humanity and the universal factors that make us laugh.
